FOXGLOVES DOLLS

From feathered and sequinned head pieces to tattooed bodies and hand trimmed beards - the littlest of details have the biggest impact. Stitched with love xox

Every doll features button jointed arms, hand embroidered faces and is solidly stuffed with hypo-allergenic polyfil. The dolls come with a handmade tag featuring it's name and 'birthdate' - all names are sourced from the 1920s. Woolen sweaters, toques and wraps are made from socks and hand stitched in place. Every doll has it's own unique character, is stitched with love and will be a perfect companion.

This journey began in the fall of 2014 when my littlest asked me to make her a mermaid doll. I set out to research different joinery techniques, styles, fabrics and so on; sat down at my Mother's vintage Elna and created my very first doll - I was hooked!

Q + A WITH THE GAL BEHIND FOXGLOVES - KIRSTEN DEGNER
What was your inspiration behind your first collection - the Nautical Collection
I have always been drawn to my surroundings for inspiration - both indoors and out. Foghorns, vintage typography, old maps, sequins, feathers, weathered wood and nautical lore were at the top of my list for my first collection - the Nautical Collection. From this eclectic mix the burly fishermen, whimsical merfolk, bathing beauties and fancy flappers hoping to catch the eye of a sailor at the annual dock dance were born.

Why the name FOXGLOVES
Foxgloves are a native flower that grow in abundance on our island. They have large, broad leaves, and a sturdy stock to hold its delicate bell flowers that reach to the skies. It can grow and flourish from even the poorest of soils - it has vision, perseverance and LOVE.

Please tell us a little bit about yourself, your background, where you are from, and why you started FOXGLOVES
I am a full-time Mama to two charming children, wife to a fearless rock climber, owner of an eccentric menagerie of furred, scaled and feathered friends, a self proclaimed crafter and a graphic designer.
In 2004, my husband and I moved to Bowen Island - the island that I left in 1987 after arriving in 1978. I always knew I would return here. We purchased our first house, embedded ourselves in the community and started growing our roots...we were home.

Before starting our family, I was the lead graphic designer for a large interior design firm that specialized in hospitality and retail commercial spaces. It was a challenging, rewarding and incredibly creative position. I gained extensive knowledge of the importance of branding through clean, co-hesive design practices.

In 2006, I ventured out on my own and began a small, successful design practice called Studio947, which is still alive and well today.

FOXGLOVES was originally started as a blog that documented our day to day successes and challenges of living life in a rural, small and somewhat isolated community. To share ideas with other mothers in similar environments of things to do, kid friendly crafts and some fun ways to spark a love of nature in our families. It is still all of this PLUS the homefront for my dolls. It is my home away from home. xox
